Just Drink Smart!

November 26, 2008

If you know me, you know I love a good party.   Let me set the scene: tons of boozing, slurring my words, tripping over my own feet, acquiring a false confidence that somehow forces me to expose myself, then finally,
passing out.

The next day is usually one of great regret, lots of untruthful promises to God that if he makes the vomiting stop I will never drink again, feeling like an ass for wasting a beautiful Sunday on the couch, feeling ashamed about mooning the guys on the garbage truck, and then my biggest concern of all—that bloated feeling and guilt about the extra inch around my mid-section.

I’ve come up with a few ways to “lighten up” those calorie dense drinks and possibly lessen unsightly mid-section fat. Here’s a toast to YOU and the guys on the garbage truck!

Cuban cocktail Light Mojito

½ lime cut into 6 wedges
1 ½ tablespoons lime juice
2 tablespoons torn mint leaves

1/ tsp honey, warmed
2 ounces rum
4 ounces club soda
Fresh mint sprig
Lime wedge

1. Fill a martini shaker with 1 cup ice. Add lime wedges, lime juice and mint

2. Muddle lime and mint with a pestle or a long spoon until well-bruised and fragrant.

3. Combine honey, run, and club soda. Stir gently to dissolve honey. Add to muddled mixture. Stir until mixture is well chilled. Strain into a rocks glass and fill with ice. Garnish with mint and lime.

Use flavored Vodka? They are so many flavored vodkas on the market, available in every flavor from apple to pomegranate to make drinks tasty without extra calories.

Lighten up?My favorite way of making drinks lighter? I cut the fruit juice with seltzer water. The result is a nice fizzy drink, half the calories, but still plenty flavorful from the fruit juice.

Replace sugary syrups with fresh juice?I’m starting to sound like a true drunk, but another favorite drink of mine is a good margarita. However, I hate simple syrup. My solution? Requesting fresh lime juice and a splash of orange juice instead of the syrup.
