We’ve all been there. Where you ask? Standing in the line for lunch, just waiting, wondering why the jerk off up front is holding up the line, when for some unknown reason the person next to you BEGINS TO SPEAK and says something random like, “Crap. I hope they don’t run out of diet soda.” If you’re like me, as soon as that stranger says something, you first thought… “Aww damn, HERE we go.” And that’s when you know you’ve got a problem. That person is what we call a Random Conversation Starter (or RCS, for short). And, no matter how hard you pretend you didn’t hear them, it doesn’t help.

The moment they’ve said something, they don’t need confirmation from you to keep going. They just proceed in such an unholy, yet natural, annoying manner: “I only drink diet soda. I don’t know how people can drink regular soda. Do you drink regular soda? If you do, you shouldn’t, you should switch to diet.“ Of course, being the nice people that we are, at that point we have to give some kind of acknowledgment. Perhaps a short, fake smile, and then turn away. This action SHOULD imply that the conversation is done on our end, but that seems like the wrong thing to do. It’s almost like a cheer to them, they just continue, “Do you usually eat here? Oh, were are you from? You know, my wife was sick when I left home this morning. A temperature.”

These people are everywhere!! It is extremely annoying when you run into one. Can someone please explain to me why these people feel the need to start a conversation when you’re clearly not interested in talking to them??

It’s such a mystery. An annoying mystery.
